George Woodhead and Martha Field were married in Kirkburton by Banns, 5/22/1809. Witnesses: John Woodhead, Uriah Brook

George had a brother, John Woodhead, who was also a school master, and married to the sister of Martha Field, Amelia, born in 1795.
The sisters' parents were Stephen Field and Mary Rockwell

George resettled in Stalybridge with his son , also named George..
George opened a grocery on Grosvenor Street in Castle Hall, and eventually, young George took over ownership.
Young George had four children, one of whom was Henry Woodhead, who also took over the greengrocer/confectionary shop on Grosvenor street near Grosvenor Square.

When the elder George moved to Stalybridge from Cumberworth, several of his siblings came along.
One was his brother John and sister, Susannah. Most of the Woodheads lived in the Castle Hall neighborhood.

34. George Woodhead was born on 4 Jun 1826 in Cumberworth and was buried on 13 Aug 1887 in St. Paul's Church, Stalybridge, Grave R.16.G.40 ( Flat Stone).

General Notes: In 1851, in the Castle Hall, Dukinfield area of Stalybridge, the elder George Woodhead, lived on Brierly Street, where he was a school teacher. Living with him his son George, 1826, Elizabeth, 1830, daughter, Joseph, grandson, James Houldsworth, son -in -law, a lawyer, Susannah, daughter, 1822, and Martha, his granddaughter. Martha and Joseph may have been the children of James Houldsworth and Susannah Woodhead. George Woodhead the elder's, wife, Sarah, who was still alive, must not have joined her husband, George, Elizabeth and Susannah yet in Cheshire. By 1861, the elder George was a grocer.
When Sarah died, George was remarried to Kitty Hollingworth.

General Notes: Henry ( Harry) Woodhead was the son of SARAH TAYLOR WOODHEAD After Sarah's death following Henry's birth, Henry's father,GEORGE WOODHEAD, remarried. George married KITTY HOLLINGWORTH of Hollingworth, in 1860. Kitty died in 1910 and is buried at Saint Paul's, Stalybridge, with her husband George, Sarah, (Henry's biological mother,) and Harry Woodhead. HARRY WOODHEAD was the son of Henry, He died while fighting in France, in 1917. Kitty reared Henry and stayed with his family after George died.

Henry Woodhead married Nancy Armstead, 1887, Holy Trinity Church, Hyde. Nancy was the daughter of JAMES and Elizabeth Armstead. Elizabeths' mother, SARAH ANN BUCKLEY, was from Huddersfield , Yorkshire, and her mother, was NANNY ELLAM from Huddersfield.
NANNY lived in Stalybridge with James Armstead, Elizabeth Armstead, Nancy Armstead ( wife of Henry Woodhead) and SARAH ANN BUCKLEY on 49 Kay Street in Stalybridge. 1861 Census, NANNY was 74 years old.
Henry was also a grocer in Stalybridge. In 1901,the family lived at 67 Grovenor Street and 1 Vaudry Street. In 1887, Henry lived at 14 Astley Street, Stalybridge and Nancy Armstead lived at 50 Kay Street. Witness to Henry's wedding were Martha Woodhead and William Woodhead.
In 1881, Henry was living with George and Kitty Woodhead at 73 Grasscroft Street in Dukinfield. George's niece Mary, age 41, a cotton winder, lived with them.
Henry was a member of the Masonic Order, as a member of Stamford and Warrington Lodge no. 1408.
Mr Woodhead was a warden of St Matthews Church, Lord Street
He was Grandmaster for two years in the Lodge.
When his wife, Nancy died, Henry ran a fish and chips restaurant.
Henry died in June 1934 in Dukinfield.

Henry was also a grocer in Stalybridge. In 1901,the family lived at 67 Grovenor Street and 1 Vaudry Street. In 1887, Henry lived at 14 Astley Street, Stalybridge and Nancy Armstead lived at 50 Kay Street. Witness to Henry's wedding were Martha Woodhead and William Woodhead.
In 1881, Henry was living with George and Kitty Woodhead at 73 Grasscroft Street in Dukinfield. George's niece Mary, age 41, a cotton winder, lived with them.
Henry was a member of the Masonic Order, as a member of Stamford and Warrington Lodge no. 1408.
Mr Woodhead was a warden of St Matthews Church, Lord Street
He was Grandmaster for two years in the Lodge.
When his wife, Nancy died, Henry ran a fish and chips restaurant.
Henry died in June 1934 in Dukinfield.

Henry married Nancy Armstead, daughter of James Armstead and Elisabeth Armstead, on 27 Jul 1887 in Holy Trinity Church, Castle Hall, Stalybridge. Nancy was born in 1860 in Stalybridge, died on 23 Feb 1908 in Dukinfield at age 48, and was buried on 26 Feb 1908 in St Paul's Stalybridge, Grave R.16.G. 40.

83. Samuel Woodhead was born in Sep 1888 in Stalybridge, Cheshire, died on 31 Aug 1939 in Providence, R.I. at age 50, and was buried in 1939 in Brayton Cemetery, Warwick, Rhode Island.

General Notes: Samuel emigrated to Rhode Island in 1910. At the time of his death. he was an accountant for an oil company, and was previously an accountant at a Pawtucket cotton mill.
Sam and Annie Gee were married in Pawtucket, Rhose Island in 1912. Many of their wedding gifts were being brought to them on the Titanic in 1912. The gifts went down with the Titanic.

Samuel and Ann Woodhead settled in Pawtucket, moved to Church Street, Conimicutt Village, Warwick ,were members of the Woodbury-Union Church, on West Shore Road, now a Presbyterian Church.
Both are buried in the Brayton Cemetery in Apponaug Cemetery, Warwick, Rhode Island
The Brayton Cemetery was abandoned many years ago and community members are trying to maintain the site.
David Cole Matteson, of Warwick, Rhode Island, recently reset the headstone for the family.



Samuel married Annie Gee, daughter of Edwin Gee and Martha Bardsley Kenyon, in 1912 in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Annie was born on 5 Dec 1889 in New Houses, Werneth, Cheshire, died on 19 May 1975 in Providence, Rhode Island at age 85, and was buried in Brayton Cemetery, Warwick, Rhode Island.

General Notes: Annie Gee was born in Romiley, Cheshire, England,1889. Annie lived with her father Edwin Gee, her grandfather Henry Gee, and her mother, Martha Kenyon Gee, at New Houses in Gee Cross, Werneth in 1891.( See Martha Bardsley Kenyon).

In 1897, Annie's mother Martha Kenyon Gee,died of complications of childbirth (kyphosis of the pelvis, 32 hour parturition), losing the child as well. The address the Gees lived at then was on Castle Street in Godley, in 1897.

In 1899, Edwin Gee, of 165 Victoria Street, Newton, in Ashton Under Lyne, remarried to Mary Ann Fletcher, widow of Simon Fletcher and daughter of Margaret and Joe Band , born inYorkshire, a coal miner, prior to his death. Margaret Band was born in Ireland. Edwin was a goods checker and Mary Ann, a card room hand.
In 1901, Edwin, Mary Ann and Annie Gee were living at 6 Fern Street, in Werneth.

Samuel Woodhead and Annie Gee were married in Pawtucket ,Rhode Island, by Rev. Frank Appleton, of St. Paul's/Holy Trinity Church, School Street, on April 18, 1912.
Many of their wedding gifts were on the Titanic when it sank.
Their first daughter, Edith Elizabeth Woodhead, was born in Pawtucket, January 31, 1914 and the next daughter, Dorothy Martha Woodhead was born in 1917.
Samuel worked at a local Cotton Mill as an accountant.
Annie and Sam moved to Church Street in Conimicutt Village, Warwick, Rhode Island.

Samuel died while he and Annie were living on Violet Street in Providence, in 1939.

In her senior years became a companion for Madeleine Barlow, a lifelong friend, in Cranston, Rhose Island. She lived with Madeleine until age 80, when she slipped and fell. Annie passed away in a nursing home in Johnston, Rhode Island, from complications of pneumonia, in 1975.
She was buried in the Brayton Cemetery, Warwick, Rhode Island.

General Notes: Edith Woodhead was born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. She attended elementary school and middle school in Warwick, Rhode Island.

She graduated from Central High School in Providence and went on to study nursing at the Mount Sinai School of Nursing, in New York, where she met her husband, a medical resident, Dr Irving Beck, also from Rhode Island. She worked as a nurse for Dr Louis Bolotow, in Providence, until her marriage.

Edith married Dr Irving Addison Beck, son of Harry S. ( Herseh) Beck and Elizabeth Esther Temkin, on 22 Jun 1945 in Providence. Irving was born on 4 Nov 1911 in Providence, Rhode Island, died on 25 Jan 1998 in Roger Williams Medical Center, Providence at age 86, and was buried in Lincoln Park Cemetery, Warwick, R.I..

General Notes: Dr Irving Addison Beck graduated from Brown University in 1932, Magna Cum Laude with a degree in Biology. Member of the debating team and Phi Beta Kappa.
He graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1936 with highest academic honors.

Dr Beck was an Internist with a specialty in Cardiology.
He stayed in Rhode Island all his life

95. Stephen Milton Beck was born on 15 Sep 1946 in Providence, Rhode Island, died on 17 Mar 1980 in Boston, Mass. St Elizabeth Hospital at age 33, and was buried in Lincoln Park Cemetery, Warwick, R.I..

General Notes: Stephen Beck was born in Providence, Rhode Island.
He attended Providence Country Day School, East Providence, Rhode Island, Worcester Academy in Worcester, Ma., Temple University in Pa., Lake Forest College in Ill., and Boston Universityin Boston, Massachusetts.
He was a member of the Peace Corp in the American southwest and in Bogota, Colombia.
Following the Peace Corp, he was a social worker in Providence, R.I.
Stephen moved to Boston to attend a PHD Program in Sociology at Boston University.
While at Boston University, he taught two courses. Sociology and Sociology of Sports. He was teaching up until his death, following a car accident, in 1980.
Football, hockey, baseball, car racing, basketball, jazz, Thelonius Monk, John Coltrane, Dave Brubeck and the gothic novelist, H.P. Lovecraft, from Providence, were some of Stephen's many passions.
Stephen Beck and Nancy Weiner were separated about one year prior to death.
